A budget multifunction printer is nothing new from Epson but the Stylus SX218 is slightly different from previous models because it’s reasonable to run in terms of the cost of printer cartridges. A full set of Epson SX218 ink cartridges costs around £30 and because each colour has its own separate cartridge it means you only have to change the colour that is empty and no ink is wasted. There are also compatible Epson ink cartridges available for the SX218 which cost around £15 and yield the same amount of pages as the originals. Although aimed at the budget market the print quality produced by the SX218 is far better than your would expect and is equal to that of a printer twice its price. The scanner is not as impressive but does a good job as does the copier. The copier is one of the function which doesn’t require a PC and the other is direct printing from a memory card or digital camera thanks to the built in memory card reader and PicBridge connection. The build quality of the SX218 is a little flimsy and the operation noise level quiet loud but this is to be expect from a printer in this price range. Overall though, the stylus SX218 is a solid device with a lot going for it.
